The Maple Yaba Cycling Road is a bicycle path that uses the abandoned Yabakei Railway line and was established in 1982. Because it uses the old railway line, the gradient is gentle and it is a cycling course recommended for beginners.
The "General Prefectural Road Nakatsuyama Bicycle Path" stretches for approximately 36 kilometers from Prefectural Road Usukiokidaisen to Yamakunimachi Morizane, and of this, approximately 22 kilometers from Hon'yabakei to Yamakuni is a bicycle-only road that runs along the Yamakuni River.
You can enjoy many scenic spots, such as the beautiful autumn leaves of Yabakei and the Ao no Cave, which is made famous by Kikuchi Kan's "Beyond Gratitude and Revenge."The cycling road is rich in variety, including tunnels and iron bridges that use former railway lines.

History of the Yabakei Railway
The Yabakei Railway opened in 1913. It is affectionately known as "Yatetsu," and runs about 36 kilometers from its starting point at Nakatsu Station to its final destination at Morimi Onsen Station, passing by scenic spots along the Yamakuni River, such as Hotokezaka, Ao no Domon, and Tekihippo.
The Yatetsudo line first opened in 1935 as a tourist route through the scenic Yabakei area, with female guides on board, and became very popular. However, due to the boom in private cars during the high economic growth period, the number of passengers decreased, and the line was abolished in 1975.

A heritage that tells the story of that time
Many bridges, tunnels, stations and other facilities remain along the line, and Atsugase Tunnels No. 1 and No. 2 (Sanko area) and Hirata Station platform (Yabakei area) are registered as national tangible cultural properties.
There are also many modern civil engineering heritage sites designated by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, one of which is the Yamakunigawa Second Bridge, with its 10 beautiful stone piers and gentle curves, making it a recommended spot for taking commemorative photos.
