The house where Yukichi Fukuzawa spent his early youth
When Yukichi Fukuzawa was 1 year and 6 months old, his father suddenly died, so in the autumn of Tenpo 7 (1836), his mother and her 6 children returned to the domain's home of Nakatsu from the Nakatsu domain's storehouse in Osaka.
The first house he lived in was a small house that his father lived in before being transferred to Osaka, and although the building no longer exists, it has been restored as a former residence and can be visited (it is located next to the parking lot of the Fukuzawa former residence). The house he later moved to is the Fukuzawa former residence that remains today.
It was designated as a national historic site on June 22, 1971.

The Fukuzawa Memorial Museum, adjacent to the Fukuzawa Yukichi Former Residence, was renovated in 2011. The exhibits on the first floor chronologically trace the life of Fukuzawa Yukichi, while the second floor showcases materials highlighting various aspects of Fukuzawa Yukichi.
Many items related to Fukuzawa Yukichi are on display, including the first edition of "Encouragement of Learning," calligraphy, letters, photographs, and the first issue of the 10,000 yen banknote.
We have been creative in adding the elements of "listening" and "touching" in addition to just "seeing" so that everyone can enjoy the tour.
