It is said that the temple was founded in Tensho 15 (1587) by the priest Kuyo, a member of the Seizan branch of the Jodo sect of Buddhism who moved from Himeji to Nakatsu following Kuroda Takataka.
Later, in Tensho 17 (1589), when Takataka plotted to assassinate the previous lord, Kii Shigefusa, inside Nakatsu Castle, his retainers used this temple as their base to fight and meet their end. Since then, no matter how many times the white wall in front of the gate has been repainted, it has always been stained with blood, so it was eventually repainted red, and this is how the name "Red Wall" came about.
The fierce battle at that time can still be seen today, with sword marks scattered on the main pillar in the temple grounds. In addition, the vassals of Chinfusa who died in battle were buried together and enshrined in the Enmei Jizo Bodhisattva Hall within the temple grounds.
