Murakami Medical Museum

The Murakami medical family has continued as a medical practice since the first head priest, Sohaku, opened a clinic in Shomachi in Kan'ei 17 (1640), and has left behind several thousand medical and other documents.
Nakatsu City has opened the Murakami Medical Family Museum as an annex of the Nakatsu City History and Folklore Museum, based on the collections and buildings of the Murakami Medical Family, which have been in continuous continuity from 1640 to the present day. The Murakami Medical Family Museum exhibits mainly on the history of the Murakami Medical Family and the medical history leading up to human dissection. Through the history of medicine, Dutch studies, and culture in Nakatsu, we aim to uncover the genealogy and history of local scholarship that produced Maeno Ryotaku and Fukuzawa Yukichi, and to improve citizens' understanding of their hometown and its culture. We hope that the museum will be widely used as a place for lifelong learning in the future.
