Oe Medical Museum

The Oe Medical Museum is housed in the former home of the Oe family, who were the official physicians of the lord of Nakatsu domain.
The Oe family has served as court physicians for generations since the first head, Oe Gensen, and the words "Medicine is not a benevolent art, but one should strive to be benevolent" have been passed down as medical precepts. The fifth head, Oe Kumozawa, created a medicinal herb garden on his property and used the herbs he grew there to perform medicinal bath therapy.
The museum has a medicinal herb garden where you can see rare medicinal plants (*).
In addition to the famous "Kaitai Shinsho" and "Jutei Kaitai Shinsho," the museum also exhibits the illustrations of an anatomical book "Oranda Zenku Naigai Bungozu" (Completed around 2003, published in 1682), translated by a Dutch tutor in Nagasaki and donated in March 1772; medical materials from Hanaoka Seishu, who was the first person in the world to successfully perform breast cancer removal surgery under general anesthesia; materials from Karashima Seian, a doctor of the Nakatsu domain who was active in the treatment of smallpox; and materials from Dr. Tahara Jun, who in modern times unraveled the mystery of heartbeat.

(*) There are about 40 kinds of medicinal herbs planted in the herb garden. All of them are essential for the development of medicine. Admission to the herb garden is free. Although it depends on the crowding and other conditions, free tours are also available. Please ask the staff first.
