The temple was founded in Tensho 16 (1588) by Master Koushin.
Koshinshi's secular name was Kuroda Ichiemon. He was the youngest brother of Kuroda Kanbei and became a monk when his father, Kuroda Minokami Mototaka, passed away.
When Kanbei entered Nakatsu from Banshu, he admired his brother Kanbei's virtue and went with him to Nakatsu. He built Sairenji Temple in Teramachi and became its first chief priest. Since then, he has been spreading the light of the Dharma in this area for over 400 years.
The current main hall was rebuilt in Tempo 14 (1844), and according to the Kongo-munji plaque, the initiator was an 8-year-old boy named Harimaya Sukejiro.
When the head of the temple, Obata Tachikatami, heard that this boy was carrying pebbles from the Yamakuni River and preparing to build a magnificent main hall, he was deeply moved and dedicated his wealth to the reconstruction.
The main hall was also the place where the 8th feudal lord, Masamoto Okudaira, held tea ceremonies and Noh performances at the time of the reconstruction.
Temple treasures: The Great Eagle, Jurojin and the Crane, sliding door paintings, etc.
