Okakoi Mountain

Inside the castle, between the outer and inner moats, earthworks called "Okakoiyama" were built by piling up the soil from the moats in order to further strengthen the defense of the castle. It is thought to have been completed during the Hosokawa period, but its beginnings may date back to the Kuroda period.
Even today, "Okakoi Mountain" can be seen in various places.
Nakatsu Castle is the only castle town in Kyushu where the earthen ramparts surrounding the castle remain, making it an extremely valuable relic.
