Joanji Temple is the family temple of the Ogasawara family (built in 1640), and the wooden Amida Buddha statue, the principal image of the temple, is said to have been made by the late Heian period monk Genshin and is designated as a tangible cultural property of Oita Prefecture. The Great Nirvana Painting was donated during the Genroku period (1688-1703) and has remained a treasure of the temple for about 300 years since then.
