Ancient Arhat Scenery

The view of Ko-Rakan is a series of hills about 100 meters high with mysterious rock peaks and natural bridges on top, like a folding screen spread out in front of Rakan-ji Temple. The main road to Rakan-ji Temple is through the tunnel under Ko-Rakan, so the view looks just like the mountain gate of Rakan-ji Temple.

The highest peak of the tunnel is Hirai-ho, the peak with two caves to the north is Tenjin-bashi, and the group of rock peaks that jut out to the south of the ridge are called Goto-ho. The name Ko-rakan seems to have been given to it because of the appearance of the arhat statues lined up on the mountain, and there is an old legend that a nearby stone Buddha jumped like this overnight.

A public parking lot has been built in front of Korakan, and a nature trail has been constructed up the mountain, with stone Buddha statues in natural caves, Bishamonten cliff-carved Buddha statues nearby, and Kunisaki Pagoda. Kunisaki Pagoda, which stands on top of a cliff, is a work from the Muromachi period.

The scenery of Ko-Rakan, together with that of Rakanji Temple, is one of the representative sights of Yabakei. Rakanji Temple boasts a cultural landscape, while Ko-Rakan boasts a natural landscape, and the harmony between the two is what makes it so appealing.
