Yabakei Dam

It is an artificial lake that stores the abundant water of the Yamaitsu River. It is surrounded by rocks and young and brocaded maples that are unique to Yabakei, and you can see different expressions depending on the season.

Yabakei Dam is a multipurpose dam constructed as part of the Yamakuni River Comprehensive Development Project on the Yamautsuri River, a first-Class river in the Yamakuni River water system, based on the Specified Multipurpose Dam Act, for the purposes of flood control, maintaining the normal function of flowing water, supplying water for drinking and industrial use, and generating electricity, and was constructed by the Ministry of Construction (now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) at a total cost of approximately 45,000,000,000 yen. It was completed in 1985, and is one of the largest dams in the prefecture, with a crest length of 313m and a dam height of 62m.
As the surrounding mountains change from fresh green to deep green and then to autumn leaves, the appearance of Yabakei Dam changes. Its beauty is sometimes compared to Lake Geneva in Switzerland.
Lake Yabakei, which has some of the best lake surface conditions in Japan, also attracts many people for water sports such as water skiing and wakeboarding.
