Bakei-bashi Bridge was built as a replacement for the Shimoji bridge that was built in November of 1914 but washed away in April of 1922. It was moved 70m upstream, began work in January of 1923, and finished in October of the same year.
It was damaged by the heavy rains caused by the 2012 rainy season front in July 2012 and the heavy rains in northern Kyushu in July 2012, and has been closed to traffic.
Yabakei Bridge, which was also damaged and closed to traffic, was restored and reopened to traffic on June 23, 2013. However, Bakei-bashi Bridge remained closed to traffic due to requests for replacement from residents, who claimed that driftwood had accumulated on the bridge, creating a dam that was causing the river to flood.
However, traffic was reopened in June 2014 as an interim measure.
Type: 5-arch stone bridge, Length: 82.6m, Span: 13.9m, Arch: 4.8m
Designated as a tangible cultural property by Nakatsu City
