Komo Shrine

Komo Shrine, also known as the ancestor of Usa Shrine
Komo Shrine, also known as Daisada Shrine, is said to be the ancestor of Usa Jingu, the head shrine of all Hachimangu shrines in Japan. The first shrine building was constructed during the Jowa era (834-48), and the seven halls of the shrine temple were built in Tennin 2 (1109).
The triangular pond behind the main hall is itself the shrine's sacred object. During the Hayato Rebellion in Yoro 3 (720), a pillow was made from a plant called "makomo" that grows in the triangular pond, and was placed on a portable shrine as a blessing for Usa Hachiman. Since then, the straw pillow has been used as a blessing for Usa Hachiman.

Highlights of Komo Shrine

Shinmon

It is a very rare three-bay, single-door, double-storey gate with a sokai (a raised platform) from the early Edo period, and is an important building from an academic perspective as a gate from that period, and has been designated an Important Cultural Property by the government.

Triangular Pond

The triangular pond at the back of the main hall of the Komo Shrine is itself the object of worship. In the past, people would weave the plant called 'Masumi' that grows in the pond into a pillow shape and use it to enshrine the deity of the Usa Shrine.
